Hello, I am Mike Cherrington, owner of Cherrington Tax Solutions. I started preparing tax returns professionally in 1986 while I was still in the military. I wanted to develop a career that would allow me to work someplace warm in the winter, and travel with my wife in an RV the rest of the year. After the military, I worked as an Engineer and part time for H&R Block in Agusta Georgia. Eventually I moved to South Florida and worked as a Corporate Accounting Manager and again part time for H&R Block. It was in Florida, where I passed the Enrolled Agent exam and was promoted to Master Tax Adviser.
Enrolled agents are the highest level of credentialed tax professions and provide their clients with the confidence that their finances will be protected.
From Florida, I moved to Sacramento California to take care of my ailing mother-in-law. I also worked part time for H&R Block, taught the basic tax preparation course to new employees and advanced topics such as the self-employed taxpayer, rental property, and disposition of business property. After a few years with H&R Block in California, I started my own business, determined to make interaction with clients more personal.
I want to mention two clients that emphasize some of my core values. First was the State of California. I won a bid to prepare taxes for wards of the state, who had financial means but lacked the capacity to care for themselves. I want to think California hired me because I was the best preparer in the state; but more likely because I don’t charge exorbitant fees. The second client I met was while doing volunteer work for VITA (volunteer income tax assistance program). He was in deep trouble with the IRS, owing over $85,000 going back several years. I analyzed his case and discovered several mistakes made by his CPA on the return done after he lost his rental properties in foreclosure. I corrected his returns and instead of owing, he should have had a refund. How does this emphasize my core value? Because it took two years of persistent communication with the IRS and the Small Business Administration and eventually an ask for help from Senator Feinstein to get this resolved in my client’s favor.
I moved my business to Florida, pursued my dream of working in the winter and traveling the USA in my RV. My wife and I have camped in all 50 states and have attended tax-related conferences while also hiking and swimming in some of the most beautiful spots imaginable.
One such conference was with the National Tax Practice Institute, where I was named a Fellow. NTPI Fellows have completed a stringent, three-level program of study that covers all facets of representing clients before the IRS.
As an Enrolled Agent, I am authorized to represent you before the IRS. I am not taking representation clients at this time as I am limiting my practice to preparation; but I have accumulated years of experience with IRS horrors and I use that experience to keep you out of trouble.
I hope you will allow me to be of service to you. My commitment is to provide timely, accurate and secure preparation of your tax return at a fair and reasonable cost. Please fill in the contact information. I will personally respond and provide the best possible solution to your tax needs.
